Alan Parkes/ Doug Shepherd Memorial Early Career Fellowships: 2 Posts

The School of Computing and Communications are committed to research and teaching excellence, and strongly believe in the virtuous synergies between the two. In memory of our former colleagues Alan Parkes and Doug Shepherd, who both made very substantial positive contributions to the collegiate culture, student experience, and research environment we enjoy, we are creating two early career fellowships to support up and coming academics who wish to build their career here.

You will be committed to making a positive contribution to society through the advancement of knowledge and learning in Computing and Communications.  The fellowships are intended for those in an early stage of their academic career who are able to demonstrate their potential both in terms of directed vision, and capability for research, but also have a passion for contributing to learning, scholarly activity and engagement.

We will prioritise fellows whose interests are complementary to one of our strategic priorities, which include:

  • Inter-disciplinary research institutes in Security, Data Science and Social Futures;
  • Digital Health and our £42m health innovation campus;
  • Improving teaching pedagogy, HEFCE Institute of Code, and Computing at Schools;
  • Widening participation and gender inclusion in Computing;
  • And complementary to traditional Lancaster strengths (Networking and Communications, Software Engineering, Distributed Systems, Human Computer Interaction, Data Science, Cyber Security, Ubiquitous Computing/IoT).

These fellowships are for 3 years and it is intended that they will equip an early career researcher to develop a strong disciplinary and interdisciplinary research programme, build their confidence and capability for inspiring teaching in order to become a lecturer at Lancaster within the school. Subject to satisfactory performance, these posts will transition into an indefinite Lectureship, which will be assessed during the final year.

Teaching and effective communication and engagement is an essential part of being an academic. Teaching will be expected in order to provide the basis for a full academic career, but this will be limited to 25%, 50%, 75% of normal lectureship loads over the three years to allow for staff development, training and a focus on engagement. Major administrative or managerial responsibilities will not be assigned.

Access to start up research funds may be available from within the relevant centre, depending on need, and the Fellow will be mentored towards gaining grant support. Fellows will be expected to return high quality research outputs to REF 2021.

You will be appointed on the grade appropriate to experience. Normally a Fellow appointed from or shortly after their PhD will be appointed on grade 6, whereas those with additional postdoctoral experience may be appointed at grade 7.

These posts are open to early career individuals of the highest potential who have begun to establish a reputation for highest quality research and teaching at the forefront of their discipline, who have a commitment to working across disciplines to address major problems and to learning and teaching at university level.

Posting Summary

The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. This position is responsible for daily care of the children enrolled in his/her class. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: physical caregiving, following an age appropriate daily plan, and facilitation of supportive relationships with co-workers, parents, and students. The Classroom Assistant II ensures, supports, and promotes each child’s safety, health, and development in cooperation with their families and other early childhood professionals in a manner consistent with NAEYC, NJDHS and child care licensing regulations

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required.

Job Description

 

The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) seeks to fill a Student Assistant position to contribute to CIMMS Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground (mPING) project (http://mping.ou.edu/).

The principal duties of this position are:

  • Develop technical expertise with the Python/Django RESTful system and the packages and tools used in the mPING project
  • Develop a plan for system improvements and changes to the mPING system with CIMMS personnel
  • Document the project by way of creating appropriate wiki pages
  • Potentially work on creating automated backup and system monitoring tools
  • Potentially make modifications and improvements to the iOS and Android mPING apps
  • Potentially develop new display web tools for research purposes
  •  

     

    Job Requirements

     

    Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Fall 2018 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

    • Must attach Fall 2018 oZONE class schedule.

    Skills:

    • Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
    • Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications

    Department Preferences:

    • Optional experience with mobile app development on Android and/or iOS is a plus
    • Experience debugging and/or trouble shooting software and hardware issues
    • Experience working with complex software applications and web-based communications
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
