Description:
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under general supervision, the RealTime Captioner provides immediate verbatim translation of spoken English into text using court reporting methods, a steno machine, real-time technology, software and a laptop computer for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, faculty, and staff in a wide array of acaredemic settings including California State University San Marcos sponsored public events. In addition, the RealTime Captioner facilitates communication by assisting the consumer with concurrent participation in the communication process by voicing questions or comments that the consumer has entered into the system.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides immediate verbatim translation of spoken English into text
2. Provide an accurate, typed transcript of what was transcribed within 24 hours
LIST OF TASKS FOR EACH MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Provides immediate verbatim translation of spoken English into text
a. Using own equipment and developed dictionary, transcribe with a high degree of accuracy what was spoken.
b. Information transcribed, must be instantly displayed on a computer for clear viewing and reading by the person in need.
2. Provide an accurate, typed transcript of what was transcribed within 24 hours.
a. Typed transcript must be provided in electronic format within 24 hours in heavily edited form.
b. Typed transcript must be provided to the person in need electronic format unless, requested in advance in hardcopy.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
1. List education and experience required
a. Formal training in court reporting and steno methods with a minimum of six months of experience providing real-time captioning services.
Preferences:
a. Graduation from a court reporting school.
b. Two years of previous real-time captioning experience in a post-secondary setting.
c. Additional post-secondary education in a four-year college or university setting.
d. Certifications from the following organizations: Certified Broadcast Captioner, Certified CART Provider and Registered Professional Reporter from the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or equivalent certifying agency.
2. List knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position.
a. Thorough knowledge of court reporting methods and theories, real-time software and technology, real-time captioning computer systems and equipment, and the industry-recognized code of ethics.
b. Comprehensive knowledge of the English language, including grammatical structures, syntax, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation; working knowledge of the language and vocabulary used in the assigned translating situations.
c. Demonstrated ability to caption a minimum of 220 words per minute with a high level of accuracy.
d. General knowledge of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Culture.
e. Demonstrated ability to caption at a minimum rate of 180 or more words per minute with a high level of accuracy;
f. Proficiently use, maintain, and troubleshoot court reporting steno equipment, real-time software, and computer systems and equipment.
g. Experience developing, maintaining, and proficiently using a thorough dictionary that enables accurate and fluid translation.
h. Effectively listen for continuity, sense, and detail while translating.
i. Demonstrated ability to write in real-time in a conflict-free manner using punctuation and sustaining accuracy in fast-paced stressful situations.
j. Must possess advanced editing skills.
k. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with consumers.
l. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
m. Experience captioning public events with projected captions.
n. Certified Broadcast Captioner, Certified CART (Computer Access Real-Time Translation) Provider, Registered Professional Reporter or Certified Real-Time Reporter from the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), or from a comparable certifying body.
o. Possession of a back-up steno writer and laptop for use when primary system is down.
p. Possession of up-to-date, current software used for captioning live-streaming events.
q. Possession of up-to-date, current software used for embedding captions into real-time video feed.
r. Working knowledge of the range of disability types encountered in higher education settings.
s. Awareness and comfort in working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.
t. Compliance with the NCRA Code of Professional Ethics regarding impartiality, confidentiality and integrity.
u. Ability to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the University community, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relations with University employees, students, and the public.
3. List machines, tools, equipment, and motor vehicles used in the performance of the duties
Must provide, maintain, adjust, troubleshoot and repair and own equipment and software, including: real-time-capable steno machine, laptop computer or display monitor, current software for real-time translation, applying current upgrades as needed, and other items for set up such as stands, cables, cords, extra battery, and surge protector.
4. Unique working conditions
a. Occasional off campus work may be required.
b. Assigned hours may include some evenings and/or weekends.
c. Refrain from wearing scented products in deference to people with multiple chemical sensitivities and chronic health disabilities.
5. Other Employment Requirements
a. This position is subject to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, education verification, reference checks and criminal record checks. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
a. This position is required to complete Sexual Harassment Prevention training “EDU Supervisor: Anti-Harassment, Discrimination, Retaliation”
b. Must participate in required campus trainings including, but not limited to, Information Security Awareness Training and Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention “EDU: Eliminate Campus Sexual Misconduct”.

Minimum Education and Experience |
