The Advanced Water Management Centre is seeking PhD candidates as part of a strategic education and research partnership supported by the Australian Meat Processing Corporation (AMPC). The Australian meat processing industry has a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability; and is investing in education partnerships to i) attract outstanding new personnel to the industry – with skillsets that drive “positive change” and ii) promote ongoing professional development and training for current employees.
PhD candidates will conduct research projects in the areas of water, waste and environment with a focus on next generation resource recovery technologies aiming to reduce the cost of waste management and/or produce value-add products from waste streams. Examples of potential project areas are attached, other projects may be considered subject to industry support. Projects will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Paul Jensen and the Centre will provide an industry funded scholarship (see details below).

The projects would suit applicants with an undergraduate degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering, B. Biotech (Hons), Microbiology (Hons) or another suitable applied science undergraduate degree. Priority will be given to domestic applicants (Australian or NZ Citizen or permanent residents). Additional selection criteria include:
- Excellent academic performance evidenced by a high Grade Point Average (GPA);
- A record of high quality research publications, and
- International applicants must meet the University of Queensland’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements, detailed at http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/english-language-proficiency-requirements
- Experience or interest in waste/water/environment/sustainable energy production is desired
- Experience or interest in agricultural industries such as the Australian red meat processing industry is desired

Remuneration
Up to four (4) AMPC-AWMC Scholarships are available for the above projects. Scholarships have a stipend of AUD$32,000 per annum for three years.
Students from Australian and New Zealand are not required to pay tuition fees. International students will be expected to apply for UQ scholarships for international students for tuition support (for more information, please visit: http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/scholarships-and-fees ). Prospective international students will be provided with assistance to apply for tuition scholarship. Successful candidates are required to take up residence in Brisbane. ANU Master of Philosophy Scholarship »
Overview
ANU Master of Philosophy Scholarships are funded by individual academic Colleges. It is expected that recipients will study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship can be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis.
Eligibility
The scholarships are available to potential and current students who:
- are domestic or international students; and
- have applied for admission to a Master of Philosophy Research program at the ANU; and
- have a Bachelor degree with first-class Honours (some Colleges may consider applicants with upper second-class Honours), or a Master degree with a research component from a recognised University.
Benefits
- Travel & removal allowance for students relocating to Canberra to commence their Master of Philosophy program;
- Dependant Child Allowance (International students only)
- Thesis Allowance

In order to be considered for this scholarship in the main round of scholarship offers International students are required to apply for admission by 31 August. Domestic students are required to apply for admission by 31 October. Colleges may consider offering these scholarships at any time of the year..

A number of ANU Tuition Scholarships are funded and awarded by individual Colleges and determined as part of the application process. This scholarship covers international student tuition fees.
Eligibility
Bachelor degree with first-class or upper second class honours, or a research Master degree from a recognised university; International students.

Further information
It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 March in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.
