A print version of this announcement (PDF) is available in the further tabs (e.g. “Application requirements”).

This scholarship programme offers you the opportunity to continue your academic education in Germany with a postgraduate course of study.

Who can apply?

  • Excellently-qualified graduates who have completed a first degree (Bachelor, Diplom or comparable academic degree) at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study programme.
  • For applicants from artistic disciplines and the field of architecture, the DAAD offers subject-specific scholarship programmes.

What can be funded?

  • Participation in a postgraduate programme after a first undergraduate course of study for the purpose of technical or scientific specialisation
  • Specifically, the following is supported:
a postgraduate or Master’s degree programme completed at a state or state-recognised university in Germany
    or
the first or second year of study at a state or state-recognised German university as part of a postgraduate or Master’s degree programme completed in the home country or in another foreign country; recognition of the academic achievements rendered in Germany must be guaranteed. The standard period of study of the postgraduate or Master’s degree programme should not be exceeded as a result of the study year in Germany.

Duration of the funding

For a postgraduate or Master’s degree completed in Germany:

  • between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of the chosen study programme
  • The scholarships are awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen study programme (up to a maximum of 24 months). To receive further funding after the first year of study for 2-year courses, proof of academic achievements thus far should indicate that the study programme can be successfully completed within the standard period of study.
  • Applicants who are already in Germany in the first academic year of a 2-year postgraduate or Master’s programme at the time of their application may apply for a scholarship for the second year of study. In this case, it is not possible to extend the scholarship.

For a study period in Germany as part of a postgraduate or Master’s degree completed in a foreign country:

  • usually one academic year; an extension is not possible.
  • The scholarship usually begins on 1st October, or earlier if the student takes a language course prior to the study programme.

Value

  • Scholarship payments of 750 euros a month
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
  • Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding
  • One-off study allowance

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

  • Monthly rent subsidy
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family

To enable scholarship holders to learn German in preparation for their stay in the country, DAAD offers the following services:

  • Payment of course fees for the online language course “Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)” (www.deutsch-uni.com ) for six months after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter
  • if necessary: Language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the study visit; the DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and project. Participation in a language course is compulsory if the study programme is taught in German.
  • Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the scholarship period
  • Reimbursement of the fees for the TestDaF test which has either been taken in the home country after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany before the end of the funding period
  • As an alternative to the TestDaF for scholarship holders who have taken a language course beforehand: the fee for a DSH examination taken during the scholarship period may be reimbursed.

PhD Positions – Max Planck Graduate Center for Quantum Materials

Job Code: 44.18

Job Offer from October 25, 2018

PhD Positions at the Max Planck Graduate Center for Quantum Materials

Quantum Materials
The term “quantum materials” is shorthand for a rapidly evolving research frontier that aims to understand, control, and ultimately design materials in which quantum physics enables novel functionalities. Recent developments include the discovery of novel phenomena resulting from the topology of the electron wave function in solids, the dynamical control of many-electron states (such as superconductivity) by coherent light fields, and the synthesis of heterostructures and devices comprising atomically sharp interfaces between different quantum materials. Six Max Planck Institutes in Germany (Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Halle, and Stuttgart) participating in the MP Graduate Center for Quantum Materials. All are world-leading institutions in their respective fields, and they operate highly attractive Ph.D. programs in cooperation with universities both in Germany and abroad.

Our offer
We offer our students a truly unique research environment with access to a large number of world-class research facilities, as well as a newly designed curriculum covering the frontiers of research on quantum materials. As a key new feature, the Center will introduce a set of high-level “Frontiers of Research” courses closely aligned with research at the Max Planck Institutes. Examples of “Frontiers of Research” in quantum materials are superconductivity, synthesis of quantum materials, quantum heterostructures, spin orbitronics, neuromorphic computing, or dynamical control. These courses will typically taught to small groups of students. In order to offset the geographical separation of the participating institutions, students from different locations will gather for courses at a central location. Beside these block course, students can benefit from a dedicated network of “immersive” video studios at all institutes involved in the Graduate Center. The “Frontiers in Research” series and other courses will be complemented by a number of courses which are offered at the participating MPIs and the associated International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS). We offer an English-language curriculum comprising lecture courses, a training program in complementary skills, and summer and winter schools with leading international partner institutions. This will provide you a unique opportunity to kick-start a successful scientific career. All accepted young researcher will receive financial support in the form of stipends or working contracts according to the German public sector.

Your profile
In order to maintain the leading role of the Max Planck Society in the field of quantum materials, we are looking for excellent students in relevant research fields such as physics, chemistry and material sciences. We are looking for highly motivated students who have a record of excellence in their previous studies. Applicants are expected to have an outstanding Bachelor or Master degree in a field of study which is well-aligned with our research activities. Candidates from any country can apply for admission to our Center. Gender balance is an important issue for us, and we particularly welcome applications from female candidates.

Your application

The application procedure for our program and the selection criteria are described on our website in detail. The highly competitive selection procedure is based on academic performance, recommendation letters, and on-site interviews for shortlisted candidates. Applications are welcome for the autumn term with start on September 1st , 2019. For more information about our Center, the participating MPIs, and the research topics please have a look at our website . Please submit your application before December 15, 2018 via our user-friendly web interface .

Contact
The management of the Center, i.e. its speaker (Prof. B. Keimer) and the coordination office, are centrally located in Stuttgart at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Heisenbergstr. 1, 70569 Stuttgart. In case of any questions don’t hesitate to contact us by email .
