Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervising Microbiologist for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The primary purpose of the Supervising Microbiologist is to conduct standard and developmental microbiologic and serologic tests and analyses related to specific routine functions and prepares reports. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Supervises the determination and interpretation of test results, and the preparation and issuance of reports.
• Conducts standardized non-routine and diagnostic microbiologic and serologic tests on submitted materials and specimens.
• Assists in conducting research on microbiological and related problems.
• Acts as an expert witness for the state concerning laboratory tests and analyses performed and is responsible for, in court.
• Assigns and directs the work of at least one unit within the laboratory; monitors work for accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
• Studies, tests and evaluates appropriate new laboratory apparatus and/or methodologies.
• Assists in the planning, organization and conduct of research activities.
• Instructs laboratory personnel in the proper use, care, maintenance and minor adjustment of equipment.
• Determines and performs supplementary procedures when initial tests results are unclear.
• Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate and informative reports of microbiologic and serologic tests and analyses containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
• Supervises, conducts performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, coaches, counsels and motivates staff to achieve peak productivity and performance.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science including or supplemented by 12 semester hour credits in specific microbiological courses in the study of microorganisms, which includes bacteriology, virology, medical parasitology and mycology.
• Three (3) years of experience in a public health or clinical laboratory conducting diagnostic microbiological tests and examinations.
• Master’s Degree in microbiology may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
• Doctorate in microbiology may be substituted for two (2) years of required experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Appointee will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey as the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
