The American Planning Association (APA) Scholarships

The American Planning Association is now offering two scholarships named as Apa Judith Mcmanus Price Scholarship, Charles Abrams Scholarship. These scholarships are available for the students who are enrolled or officially accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program. The program is designed to aid students who will pursue careers as practicing planners and genuine financial need. Awards range between $2,000 and $5,000 is available for Judith Mcmanus Price Scholarship and award of $2,000 is made for Charles Abrams Scholarship.

APA-designated Great Places in America exemplify the positive impacts of planning on the communities we cherish. Since 2007, APA has singled out 260 neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces in all 50 states. Thousands of others that distinguish cities and towns throughout the country have yet to be recognized. APA needs your help finding identifying neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces that exemplify planning excellence.

Eligibility

Eligibility required for Judith Mcmanus Price Scholarship

  • Women and members of one of the following minority groups – African American, Hispanic American or Native American Citizens of the United States
  • Students enrolled or officially accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate
  • planning program accredited by the PAB (Planning Accreditation Board) Students who intend to work as practicing planners in the public sector (which includes local,
  • State & federal government and not-for-profit careers). Students able to document their need for financial assistance

Eligibility required for Charles Abrams Scholarship

  • An applicant must be a US citizen and have been accepted into the graduate planning program at one of the five eligible schools. A nomination by the department chair is required. (Incoming students are eligible providing a letter of acceptance into the graduate planning program at the specific school accompanies their nominating letter.
  • Applicants must be in need of financial assistance as determined by a review of the information contained on the applicant’s financial aid form. Eligible students wishing to apply for this scholarship must complete the Financial Aid Application in full.

Required Documents

Supporting Documents for APA Judith Mcmanus PRICE Scholarship

  • A two-page personal and background statement written by the student, describing how their graduate education will be applied to career goals and why they chose planning as a career path,
  • A completed and signed APA Financial Aid application
  • Two letters of recommendation in support of the student’s application and career goals;
  • Transcripts of all previous collegiate and graduate academic work (official transcripts are NOT required — we prefer that you submit electronic copies with your packet)
  • Written verification from the school’s financial officer or copies of a school publication or website indicating the average cost of one academic year of graduate school
  • A resume (optional if the information is supplied in the student’s personal statement)
  • Copy of acceptance letter from a PAB-accredited graduate planning school (incoming students only)
  • A notarized statement of financial independence signed by the student’s parent(s) (optional) certifying that the student will not be taken as a tax deduction in the year for which the scholarship is sought and will not receive financial aid from the parents. If submitting tax information, please delete social security numbers.
  • The student’s signature on the application.

Supporting Documents for the Charles Abrams Scholarship

  • A letter of nomination or statement by the department chair discussing the reasons why the student was chosen, comments on the student’s strengths, areas of interest, and other abilities, as appropriate.
  • A one- to a two-page statement written by the applicant containing:
  1. a description of the applicant’s commitment to complete the planning curriculum of the university and to pursue a career in the planning profession
  2. an outline of the applicant’s academic qualifications, extra-curricular activities, and reasons for believing a scholarship award is justified
  • The Financial Aid Application.
  • Transcripts of all previous collegiate and graduate academic work (official transcripts are NOT required — we prefer that you submit electronic copies with your packet)
  • An official copy of GRE scores, if required for admission to the school.
  • It is required that any and all application materials be originals specifically developed and/or requested for the Charles Abrams Scholarship application process.

Financial aid and Award Money:     

  • Awards range for Judith Mcmanus Price Scholarship between $2,000 and $5,000. The award includes a paid one-year student membership to APA.
  • The award amount for Charles Abrams Scholarship $2,000, will be awarded to the selected candidate and will be paid directly to the student’s school to defray tuition costs. Scholarship winners also receive a complimentary one-year student membership to APA.

Application Deadline: 

All applications must be received for Charles Abrams Scholarship by May 24, 2017.

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Saint Louis University seeks MS and PhD candidates for graduate studies in Geoscience with a concentration in Geophysics. Geophysics faculty are interested in applying the tools of seismology to study deep earthquakes, regional tectonics, and earthquake hazards. Prospective students should have a strong quantitative background in geophysics, mathematics, physics, and programming. 

Financial support is available through TA and RA positions, and the Nuttli-Chan fellowship. To be considered for financial support, applications should be completed by February 1, 2018.
