Penn State University’s Student Disability Resources (SDR), within the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity, invites applications for a Disability Specialist responsible for student disability services coordination at the University Park campus. The Disability Specialist will be responsible for facilitating access to courses, programs, services, and facilities for students with disabilities. Successful applicants will provide support and case management to students with diverse disabilities, as specified by the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), and state and university policies. The Disability Specialist will have an understanding of the university environment and must possess excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Core Duties and Responsibilities include: Use expertise and analysis of individual student situations, observations, self-reports, and documentation to determine eligibility for services and appropriate accommodations; Develop, monitor, evaluate, and adjust individual accommodation plans for students; Provide ongoing student case management, follow-up, and support of accommodations, as well as related faculty support; Administer direct guidance to students on a range of issues such as academic progress, academic program policies, accessibility, and career plans in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions; Interact and collaborate with others including, but not limited to, SDR, faculty, academic advisors, and other university staff to troubleshoot and resolve student needs and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues; Maintain accurate and confidential student files, records, and correspondence; Act as a resource to SDR/unit, as well as to the larger university community. Unique Challenges of the Job include: Apply independent judgment and expertise in a student-centered position within a high-intensity work environment; Respond to multi-dimensional matters involving students in crisis, at risk, or who have other urgent needs impacting academics, as well as provide guidance to students and their families on sensitive and confidential issues; Support students with disabilities in navigating the complexity of college transition including, but not limited to, legal transition from K-12 to higher education in the rights and responsibilities of the students and the obligations of the university, change in academic expectations and environment from high school, and the role and involvement of the students’ parents; Provide disability-related academic support services (i.e., self-advocacy, time-management, organization, study skills) and career planning. Typically requires a Master’s degree or higher in an education or social science related discipline or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a university environment and working with individuals with diverse disabilities preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include: Demonstrated knowledge of different types of disabilities including, but not limited to, learning, psychological, physical health, neurological, mobility, and sensory; Ability to review, analyze, and interpret medical documentation, neuropsychological reports, other evaluations, and self-reports in order to determine appropriate academic accommodations for each student; Working knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to individuals with disabilities (i.e., ADAAA, Section 504), as well as the ability to explain them and the implications for students with disabilities; Thorough understanding of appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities at the post-secondary level; Consideration will be given to applicants with relevant experience with assistive technology such as Kurzweil. The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. Minimum Education and Experience |
AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II. |

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required. |

Skills:
- Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
- Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications
