AUT Māori and Pacific Postgraduate Equity Scholarships

The scholarship is normally awarded for twelve months of full time study only.

 Auckland University of Technology (AUT) provides Māori and Pacific Postgraduate Equity Scholarships to encourage Postgraduate Māori and Pacific leadership, scholarship and academic excellence at AUT University.

AUT Māori and Pacific Postgraduate Equity Scholarship is available to Māori and Pacific students undertaking study at Level 8 or above (New Zealand Qualifications Framework) who have demonstrated the potential to achieve highly.   The Scholarships are available to AUT students or alumni intending to enrol in a postgraduate qualification at AUT. Preference will be given given to full-time students in their thesis stage of their Masters or who have been accepted into a doctoral degree at AUT University.

Selection criteria:

  • Applicants must be either studying at AUT at the time of application or have completed their qualifying degree at AUT no more than two years prior at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be registered in ARION as having Māori or Pacific ethnicity and would normally achieve a GPA greater than 6.5 (B+/A-) across a minimum of 120pts in the final year of their qualifying degree.
  • Normally the award is conditional on the student enrolling in 120pts in an approved programme. Part-time applicants must address their need to study part-time in their personal statement.
  • If an applicant has undertaken an approved international exchange programme during the final year of their qualifying degree the GPA will be assessed across the AUT papers only. Evidence of grades for papers undertaken as part of the exchange will be required once available.
  • An applicant wishing special consideration under financial hardship will be required to provide evidence i.e. IRD statement of income plus supply a reference from someone other than a family member supporting the financial need.

General Information:

How do students apply?
Applicants must complete the online application available through the AUT Scholarships Database www.aut.ac.nz/scholarships . Applications will be open from 5 April.

The following documentation must be received on or before the closing date.
Aone-page personal statement outlining the applicant’s academic goals and career aspirations stating why they believe they merit the scholarship. Applicants must outline relevant cultural involvement or contribution.
The personal statement should also attach an outline of recent leadership positions or responsibilities held within the University or community.
If an applicant wishes to be considered under financial hardship they must address this in their personal statement and upload evidence of their financial position i.e. IRD statement of income plus supply a reference from someone other than a family member supporting the financial need.
A copy of the applicant’s transcript will be added to the application by the Scholarships Office once grades have been finalized.

Eligible applications will be assessed by a panel including the Dean, Graduate Research School, the Head of Pacific Advancement and the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Māori Advancement.

As soon as possible after the closing date.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Funding for less than 120pts will only be considered in exceptional cases only i.e. health, carer responsibilities. Evidence of the inability to commit to the programme full-time will be required.
The scholarship will not fund papers taken in subsequent years.
The recipient may hold other scholarships with the approval of the Scholarships Office.
The scholarship cannot be deferred.
Recipients must be enrolled continuously in their programme of study. Suspensions or Leave of Absence for students who have already commenced their degree will not normally be approved unless there are compelling medical or personal circumstances beyond the student’s control.
Deferral and suspension requests must be made in writing to the Scholarships Office
Recipients who take up this Scholarship but do not complete at least two semesters of study at AUT may be required to pay back the full value of the scholarship received.

Master of English and New Media Studies Scholarship


Closing date: 06/07/2018
6 July 2018

Value of Award: Full tuition fees and student levyfor the programme of studyup to a maximum of 180 points

No. of awards: Up to 25 annually

Tenure:
The scholarship is for one year only of consecutive full-time or part-time study.

AUT’s programmes in English and New Media Studies give students the ability to communicate at a high level in a range of oral, written and visual genres and media — vital skills in today’s world.

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage and support postgraduate study in the area of English and New Media Studies. The scholarship is open to domestic students only.

Applicants upload:
• A brief CV (no more than two pages)
• Academic transcripts for any tertiary study completed at any institution other than AUT.
• Two testimonials which include reference to the candidate’s background in English and/or new media studies, as well as their general academic performance and potential.

Decision makers
Applicants will be considered by a selection panel from the School of Language and Culture.
No scholarship will be awarded if the panel is of the opinion that there is no applicant of sufficient merit applying for the award.
Selection will be based on academic merit. Consideration will also be given to strategic equity objectives.
Preference will be given to full time students.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The recipient must be accepted into the Master of English and New Media Studies programme.
Domestic students may not hold any other fees scholarship in conjunction with this scholarship.
The recipient may hold additional non-tuition fee based scholarships with approval of the Head of Department and the Scholarships Office.
The scholarship must be taken up in the period 10 July to 31 August 2018.
The scholarship may be terminated at any point should any unfavourable report be received from lecturers regarding grades, or attendance.
Scholars may hold the scholarship and also be employed by the School but the employment arrangement must be managed separately under AUT’s Human Resources policies and processes.

Women on Campus Millennium Scholarship

Value of Award: $1,000

No. of awards: Multiple scholarships of the same value may be awarded depending on funding.

Tenure:
One year only.

University education is about critical thinking, fresh ideas and new ways of doing things. It is challenging – even demanding – but its benefits are considerable; not only for the students themselves but also for their families, communities and the wider society and economy. That is why AUT provides a wide range of scholarships and awards.

The purpose of these scholarships is to provide recognition to current undergraduate and/or postgraduate women students at AUT who have demonstrated support for women students at AUT.

Selection criteria:

  • Applicants must be NZ citizens or permanent residents.
  • Scholarship applicants must be women students who have demonstrated support for women who are students at AUT.
  • Applicants need to have completed at least one year of study at the University and intend to continue as an AUT student.
  • Applicants must be studying .5FTE (half time) or more.

– Academic Transcript if all previous study has not been completed at AUT.
– An 200 word statement (approx. one page) including details of current study and outlining how the applicant would use the scholarship
– A description of the applicant’s activities to support women students at AUT (maximum 2 pages)
Referees
– Applicants will be expected to nominate two members of the AUT community who have direct knowledge of their contribution to the support of women students at AUT and request they provide a statement of support.
