Computational Engineering Division Student Intern

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.
The Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate offers continuing students (undergraduate and graduate) and Bachelors or Masters recent graduates within one year the opportunity to engage in practical research experience to further their educational goals. You will provide technical and/or research support to projects in the areas of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or other related fields.
Essential Duties
At the Undergraduate Level(Non-Exempt):
– Students will work with engineers, scientists, and technical staff members to provide technical and/or research support to projects in the areas of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or other related fields.
– Under close supervision, will participate in research in assigned area.
– Gather and analyze data or information in support of scientific research.
– Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
In Addition at the Graduate and Recent Grad Level (Exempt):
– Under limited direction and supervision, will conduct research in assigned area.
– Performs technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientists in scientific research and development projects.
– Present work through presentations and/or poster sessions.
Qualifications
At the Undergraduate Level(Non-Exempt):
– Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field)
– Ability to apply basic engineering or scientific principles to solve technical problems.
– Demonstrated effective communication skills.
– Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
– Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
– Ability to work in a team environment.
In Addition at the Graduate and Recent Grad Level (Exempt):
– Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree or a recent Bachelors or Masters graduate within one year.
– Demonstrated academic achievement in an engineering or scientific curriculum.
– Experience applying advanced engineering or scientific principles to solve technical problems.
Desired Qualifications
– GPA of 3.5 or above.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Security Clearance: None required.
Note: This is a Temporary Student Intern appointment. This assignment is for a full-time position during the summer academic break; a co-op position, full-time during the academic semester/quarter, or a year-round part-time position during the academic year and full time during academic breaks. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required. |

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Fall 2018 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

Skills:
- Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
- Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications
Department Preferences:
- Optional experience with mobile app development on Android and/or iOS is a plus
- Experience debugging and/or trouble shooting software and hardware issues
- Experience working with complex software applications and web-based communications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
