MA Aesthetics and Politics Program/BFA Critical Studies
The School of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the MA Aesthetics and Politics program invite applications for a full-time nine-month faculty position in contemporary art theory, with an emphasis on Middle Eastern art and politics. Approaches that foreground gender and sexuality are particularly welcome. Based at a thriving arts campus, and with concentrations in critical theory, media and urban studies, and global studies, the MA is a rigorously interdisciplinary program that investigates the crossovers of contemporary art and political events. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to both the BFA and MA curricula, and to the MA program’s public events, daily governance, and development.

About the School of Critical Studies
The School of Critical Studies at CalArts provides a robust liberal arts education to all CalArts undergraduates. In addition to housing the MA Aesthetics and Politics program, Critical Studies houses the MFA Creative Writing Program, and the Center for Discursive Inquiry, which acts as a hub for shared faculty research.
Duties:
The successful candidate will contribute to both the MA Aesthetics and Politics program and the Critical Studies undergraduate curriculum, which provides a liberal arts education to students in the visual and performing arts.
Responsibilities include:
• Class preparation and written feedback on student writing
• A 3/3-course load, with courses meeting once a week for two or three hours
• Maintaining an active and cutting-edge research profile and practice, with regular publications and projects in the desired field
• Mentoring graduate students
• Supervising MA-thesis projects as first or second reader
• Attending faculty meetings
• Participating in curriculum planning and assessment
• Attending and participating in public events both at CalArts, in Los Angeles, and in the broader Los Angeles area
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have all of the following:
• PhD degree in Art History
• 1 published peer-reviewed articles
• 1 year of college-level teaching experience with an emphasis on Gender and Sexuality Studies.
• Active career engaged in contemporary art and aesthetics as demonstrated by published art criticism and curatorial appointments at galleries and museums.

The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required. |

Skills:
- Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
- Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications
Department Preferences:
