GEAR UP is an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. It is a federally-funded grant designed to increase the number of cohort students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
In partnership with public schools, higher education, communities, financial institutions and business organizations, the University of Central Oklahoma’s GEAR UP Central grant will work together to provide students and their families with a range of support services needed to prepare for college.
GEAR UP Central has partnered with 4 area school districts to provide opportunities for the class of 2020. GEAR UP will provide support for these students as they progress through middle school, high school and into their first year of college.
All GEAR UP activities and services are at no cost to the student, parent, teacher, or school administration!
Provide in-person academic tutoring to students. Maintain an effective and positive learning environment.
Will assist and support the GEAR UP Central staff by performing clerical, computer, and customer service related duties in an office setting. Duties include, but are not limited to typing, filing, answering phones, customer service, making copies, taking messages, greeting visitors, data entry, filing, scanning documents, office errands to other departments on campus, assisting the reception area, among other duties assigned.
ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS Fall/Spring Semesters All student employees must be enrolled at least half time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half time enrollment for Fall/Spring is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. Summer Semester Undergraduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in 6 hours to work on campus and Graduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in at least 5 hours. All other students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to work on campus. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in Fall classes in order to work on campus, but will be required to pay FICA taxes. If the number of hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum hours required to work, the student must obtain a letter from his/her advisor stating the number of hours needed to graduate. Ideal student worker needs to be avaliable to work 3-4 hours 2-3 days a week. GEAR UP Central is open from 8am – 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Will be expected to place a high importance on punctuality and dependability at the job. While a student’s primary function at UCO is the achievement of one’s degree goals, we expect your devoted time and attention to the work at hand while you are on the clock.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are needed to succeed in this support role. We expect this student clerical assistant to be dependable, thorough, detail-orientated, organized, good interpersonal skills, teachable spirit, team-minded, good attitude, and demonstrate a professional attitude and appearance. They must also honor the importance of confidentiality with office matters.
A basic knowledge of office equipment is needed (copier, scanner, fax, etc.). Computer literacy is required, including Microsoft Office programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. Efficiency to research data on the interent is needed.
Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required. Minimum Education and Experience |
AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II. |

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required. |
