Health Physics Student Intern

Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have two openings for graduate-level or recent graduate summer interns in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate. You will work under the direction of the Radiation Protection Functional Area Manager to complete a project, or series of projects, that combine hands-on experience with technical knowledge. You will interact with all levels of personnel at the Laboratory including managers, experimenters, technicians, and other personnel that may be outside the ES&H Directorate.

Essential Duties

Under the direction of LLNL Health Physics staff, and as time permits:

– Review LLNL’s written radiological training program and evaluate the proper flow down of training requirements in 10 CFR 835.

– Write the “Training” chapter for LLNL’s new draft Radiological Control Manual, transferring existing material in the ES&H Manual Documents and add where needed.

– Investigate to fully understand LLNL’s current radiological worker practical training program.

– Interact with various rad worker groups, field health physicists and radiological control technicians to collect practical training concepts and elements that will fulfill LLNL’s desire to tailor practical training to groups working with: 1) Radiation Generating Devices (RGDs), 2) Non-dispersible radioactive material, and 3) Dispersible radioactive material.

– Write a syllabus for each of the 3 practical courses above.

– Write an evaluation of rapid survey methods for flash pulse X-ray RGDs using available LLNL instruments and/or potential alternative instruments for purchase.

– Research and write operation procedure for field liquid scintillation counters (LSCs).

– Present a summary of your work to ES&H Management and other audiences.

– Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

– Must be a college or university student pursuing a graduate degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related technical field, or a recent bachelor’s or master’s graduate within one year.

– Ability to apply scientific methods to solve a defined problem or study question.

– Excellent oral and written communication skills.

– Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.

– Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

– Strong analytical skills.

Desired Qualifications

– Ability to apply basic and fundamental health physics concepts in a work environment.

– Experience in research and/or laboratory-type work settings as well as experience or working knowledge in mathematics and science.

– Demonstrated academic achievement in subject matter associated with radiation safety.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  None required.

Note:   This is a Temporary Student Intern appointment.  This assignment is for a full-time position during the summer academic break. Posting Summary

The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. This position is responsible for daily care of the children enrolled in his/her class. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: physical caregiving, following an age appropriate daily plan, and facilitation of supportive relationships with co-workers, parents, and students. The Classroom Assistant II ensures, supports, and promotes each child’s safety, health, and development in cooperation with their families and other early childhood professionals in a manner consistent with NAEYC, NJDHS and child care licensing regulations

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required.

Job Description

 

The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) seeks to fill a Student Assistant position to contribute to CIMMS Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground (mPING) project (http://mping.ou.edu/).

The principal duties of this position are:

  • Develop technical expertise with the Python/Django RESTful system and the packages and tools used in the mPING project
  • Develop a plan for system improvements and changes to the mPING system with CIMMS personnel
  • Document the project by way of creating appropriate wiki pages
  • Potentially work on creating automated backup and system monitoring tools
  • Potentially make modifications and improvements to the iOS and Android mPING apps
  • Potentially develop new display web tools for research purposes
  •  

     

    Job Requirements

     

    Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Fall 2018 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

    • Must attach Fall 2018 oZONE class schedule.

    Skills:

    • Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
    • Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications

    Department Preferences:

    • Optional experience with mobile app development on Android and/or iOS is a plus
    • Experience debugging and/or trouble shooting software and hardware issues
    • Experience working with complex software applications and web-based communications
