The successful applicants are committed to conducting independent and original scientific research, to report on this research in international publications and presentations, and to present the final results of the research in a PhD dissertation. The PhD students participate in local, national and international training activities, including summer schools and conferences, to maximally develop their potential. Some participation in faculty teaching, in the context of a didactic training module, is negotiable.
As a member of the Graduate School for the Humanities, a PhD candidate may participate in courses, seminars and summer schools organized by Dutch national graduate school Landelijke Onderzoeksschool Taalkunde (LOT) and/or by the Groningen Research School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN).
Linguistic research in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen is organized in the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG), which includes 4 research lines:
• Computational Linguistics
• Discourse and Communication
• Neurolinguistics and Language Development
• Theoretical and Empirical Linguistics.

The Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Civil Engineering offers you a 2-year position combining post MSc education and a design project to be carried out at MapXact. The educational programme, carried out at the University of Twente, will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project. In collaboration with MapXact in Harfsen you will work on high level, creative new designs for complex issues.
The innovation of new technologies for the detection of underground infrastructure is driven by the need of reduction of excavation damage and the need/demand for mapping of the underground infrastructure. MapXact focuses on development and testing of technology that maps and detects underground infrastructure. One of its priorities is the development of a Ground Penetration Radar (GPR). MapXact has a R & D department that focuses both on improvement of data exploitation (hardware) data-interpretation (software). The goal of MapXact is to improve the GPR such that cables and pipes will be mapped in 3D on a more automated and accurate way.
The project – Detection technology validation and its application
For the acceptance of new technologies, it is important to have clarity and confidence in it. Uncertainties and unjustified expectations about the possibilities and limitations can lead to restraint and disappointments. Validation leads to more clarity of the market, increasing adoption of standards, and better indication/directions for further development of the technology.
The performance of ground radars are not only dependent of hardware and software, but are greatly influenced by the application context. For example, a GPR provides less usable radar grams in conditions that promote electrical resistance of the soil (e.g. moisture retaining ground, high air-humidity). In addition, aspects such as cloud cover and urban canyons affect the accuracy of the positioning -unit.
There is also a human factor that plays a role. So the user in the field needs to know:
- what frequencies are needed to be able to scan at the desired depth and resolution;
- which walking patterns yield the desired images;
- how to act when radar measurements show unexpected anomalies.
One last variable is the image processing which often is carried out by means of post processing. Because often this processing is not performed by the one who did the field measurements, misinterpretation can appear. This reduces the quality of the final inspection report.
The unwanted variability in the measurement process frustrates providers and clients of GPR and other detection applications. In the current situation – in which implicit quality parameters are used for validation – lacks objectivity. It is not only difficult to substantiate performance of a technology, but it also has the disadvantage that promising innovations have a long lead time for approval and adoption. There is a need for detection technology validation and its application. At this moment, a systematic way in which detection and mapping technologies are tested and reviewed is missing. MapXact acknowledges the situation where is a lack of an analytical method and recognizes that customers and other providers have that difficulty. MapXact therefore sees the importance of a systematic reliable procedure that validates the ground penetrating radar performance. The development of this has an exploratory-designing character and therefore it fits in the scope of the PDEng ZoARG programme.
The intended design project will consist of the following steps:
Defining application scenarios for GPR;
Distract (performance)quality criteria for validation;
Operationalization of these criteria;
- Explore international testing principles for human-operated technology (in areas such as systems engineering, manufacturing, human-system design);
- Development of (physical) validation settings;
- Development of a testing protocol and testing scenarios (process oriented);
- Perform pilots of the designed protocol (with already accepted- and new technologies);
- Formulate recommendations for integration/recognition of the validation method in practice.
The project is planned in such a way that practical and usable interim results will be provided. With an eye on wide acceptance and application, next to MapXact other independent parties will become part of the steering group of the project. The academic guidance will take place by the faculties of Engineering Technology (Prof.dr.ir. Dorée, Dr.ir. Olde Scholtenhuis) and ITC (Prof. dr. Van der Meijde).
Graduate Programme on Antimicrobial Research and Resistance – 1 PhD position for 3 years
Threats of drug-resistant pathogens are emerging worldwide and ask for development of novel drugs that act on the pathogen’s molecular networks. This demands a new generation of bright scientists who are able to combine molecular biology, microbiology, systems biology and drug discovery and development.
Third Call for Applications
As we have availability for one more position, we are organising a third Call for Applications with a shortened procedure.
We are looking for highly motivated and talented MSc students who are interested in an ambitious multidisciplinary PhD project on antimicrobial research and resistance. The purpose of AIMMS STAR PLUS is to continue to educate and train Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to become the next generation of interdisciplinary antimicrobial research scientists, skilled in the research methodologies and approaches of diverse areas such as molecular modelling, proteomics, cell signalling and drug discovery & development.
The Amsterdam Institute for Molecules, Medicines and Systems (AIMMS) at VU Amsterdam, has been awarded an MSCA Cofund grant for continuation of its STAR graduate programme. The AIMMS STAR graduate programme offers a unique opportunity for Master’s students in their final months, or recently graduated students, to learn more about antimicrobial research and resistance by writing their own short research proposal, under supervision of an AIMMS researcher.
In short, we are looking for –international- MSc students who:
- Are highly motivated and top-talented
- Are keen on intra-European mobility to perform PhD research, specifically in Amsterdam
- Are able to work in a multidisciplinary team
- Have good writing and communication skills
- Are keen on finding solutions for solving problems related to antimicrobial research and resistance
Interested candidates are asked to send in a CV, motivation letter and their own 2-page research proposal (written under supervision of an AIMMS researcher) before 15 December 2018, 12.00 pm. CEST. Interviews with the candidates will be scheduled for January 2019. Ultimate start date is 1 March 2019.
Interested MSc students will have to comply with the mobility rules set out by the MSCA (i.e. not spent more than 1 year in NL in the 3 years prior to the starting date of the PhD position).

in the Electro-Optical Communication Systems (ECO) group, department of Electrical Engineering
The ICT post-master designers program is a two-year salaried program in the field of technological design in Electrical Engineering. The program leads to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree.
Wireless technologies are scarcely applied in aircraft applications. Currently wireless technologies are applied for example for In Flight Entertainment (IFE) and wireless interfacing maintenance data to the operator. However, wireless technologies have a significant potential to reduce weight and ease configurability of interfaces between the electrical systems in an aircraft and may be a key enabler of future applications such as autonomous self-configuring wireless data networks and remote local data communication for sensors only.
The project objective is twofold. The first objective is to determine a substantiated vision on wireless technologies in future aircrafts and design and build a proof-of-concept demonstrator to support this. The second objective is to obtain the knowledge about the multidisciplinary topics that apply to wireless technologies and their potential applications.
The work will be executed in close cooperation with Fokker Elmo. The project activities will be carried out partially at Fokker Elmo, Hoogerheide, and partially at TU/e.
Fokker Elmo (https://www.gkn.com/en/our-divisions/gkn-aerospace/our-solutions/ ), being member of GKN Fokker Technologies, is a global player in design and manufacturing of Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS) for aerospace application. Fokker Elmo headquarters are located in Hoogerheide in the Netherlands while manufacturing sites are located in Turkey, China and India. Fokker Elmo’s customer portfolio contains all major aircraft manufacturers for civil and military application.
EWIS provides a challenge in complexity. The complexity is typified by the following facts and figures. EWIS for a single aisle aircraft transports 4000 signals over 90 km of cable that weigh 800 kg and occupies 7 cubic meters. The design is made in a multi company, multi-disciplinary concurrent Engineering environment facing continuous changing data and configurations during the aircraft design phase. Electrical, mechanical, geometrical and system functional reliability concerns and constraints are considered, anticipating manufacturability, installability and maintainability. This challenge requires approximately 200 thousand engineering hours over a period of 3 years.
Department of Electrical Engineering
The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the nine departments of the Eindhoven University of Technology and provides BSc and MSc programs in Electrical Engineering. The department has nine research groups and has research collaborations with other departments at the Eindhoven University of Technology as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both within the Netherlands and internationally. The department has approximately 350 employees and 900 students.
Electro-Optical Communication Group
The Electro-Optical Communication Systems (ECO) group focuses its research on optical communication system techniques, ranging from very high speed long range transmission links, ultra-fast (all-) optical packet switching nodes, to multi-service flexible access and in-building networks, including wireless. Members of the ECO group have initiated, managed and participated in many national and EC projects (e.g. IOPGenCom, Freeband, RACE, ACTS, IST FP5, FP6, FP7, and currently H2020), notably in the area of access and short-range networks. ECO is also a leading partner in several national projects in the area of access and in-building networks and is actively involved in the definition of new innovation programs in The Netherlands. ECO is part of the Center for Wireless Technology Eindhoven (CWTe).
Candidates for the PDEng positions should have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a related topic, with excellent grades, an interest in combining theory and experiment and well-developed analytic skills. A background in wireless communication is recommended.
Conditions of employment
We offer a fulltime temporary appointment for the period of 2 years. Participants will receive a gross monthly salary of € 1865-. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) and end year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.
