Student Assistant
Berkeley Lab’s Biological System & Engineering Division has an opening for a Student Assistant. Berkeley Lab is seeking a student intern to work as part of the Fermentation Team at the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) in Emeryville, CA. This is a wonderful opportunity for a student to gain exposure to bench and pilot scale bioprocess research and to collaborate with exciting startups in industrial biotechnology.
What You Will Do:

Work closely with the ABPDU team to provide hands-on assistance in fermentation campaigns from media preparation to harvest and downstream processing.

Monitor bench-scale and pilot-scale bioreactors through the progress of fermentations, take samples for various offline analytics, and perform other key process operations.

Assist in the operation of scale up bioreactors.

Assist with and adhere to aseptic technique throughout fermentation studies.

Maintain accurate and detailed scientific logbook and batch records.

Follow all EH&S guidelines and protocols.

Enrolled in full-time academic program

Ability to lift up to 20 lbs in weight frequently.

Must be able to work at least 16 hours per week.

This is a variable, 1 year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

Minimum Education and Experience |
AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II. |

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required. |

Skills:
- Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
- Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications
