Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments Scholarship

The Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) Board at American Public Power Association is now offering four types of scholarships named as Educational Scholarships, Student Internship, Student Research Grant, and Technical Design Project (TDP).  These scholarships are open to full-time students attending school at an accredited college/university or vocational institution as a high school senior, high school graduate, or college undergraduate. Through their programs, the DEED Board provides funding to support students working. The DEED Board will provide a total of $38,000 award amount through their four scholarships.

The Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) Program is the only research and demonstration program funded by and for public power utilities. Established in 1980, DEED is dedicated to improving the operations and services of public power utilities by supporting and demonstrating innovative activities.The American Public Power Association’s vision is to shape the future of public power to drive a new era of community-owned electric service.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be full-time students attending school at an accredited college/university or vocational institution within the US and must not be graduating within 12 months of the application
  • Applicant must be a high school senior, high school graduate, or college undergraduate.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student accepted or enrolled in a vocational school or accredited college or university to be eligible to apply.
  • Applicant must be attending school in a country with at least one DEED member.
  • A student may not have more than one DEED scholarship at a time. Students may apply for a second DEED scholarship once their first is completed.
  • If a student is receiving educational assistance (tuition reimbursement) from another entity, DEED scholarship funds cannot be applied to any expenses paid by another entity.
  • Applicant must be pursuing or planning to pursue a certificate of degree that could lead to a career at an electric utility. Examples include but are not limited to power plant technology, electric line worker, powerline technology, electrical power technology, electrical line worker technology, electrical distribution systems, utility line technician, environmental specialist, and traditional and alternative power generation technologies.

Scholarship Value

  • Educational Scholarships:
  1. The target of 10 awards annually. $2,000 per scholarship paid directly to student’s university or school
  2. Educational Scholarships provides funding to support the education of students working toward technical careers that are in short supply and high demand by electric utilities.
  • Student Internship:
  1. $4,000 plus up to $1,000 in travel funds to attend applicable conference
  2. Student Internshipspaid internships to provide work experience at an electric utility sponsored by a DEED member utility.
  • Student Research Grant-
  1. $4,000 plus up to $1,000 in travel funds to attend applicable conference
  2. Student Research Grantsstudent grants provide funding to support research in an energy-related project sponsored by a DEED member utility.
  • Technical Design Project (TDP):
  1. $5,000 paid directly to the student by DEED, up to $3,000 in travel funds to share project results at APPA’s Engineering & Operations Technical Conference.
  2. Technical Design Projects (TDP) provides funding to support students working on a technical project of interest to electric utilities, especially engineering students working on their senior project.

Application Deadline

The applications are due on February 15 and October 15 each year. The 2017 DEED Scholarships deadline is October 15, 2017.

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Saint Louis University seeks MS and PhD candidates for graduate studies in Geoscience with a concentration in Geophysics. Geophysics faculty are interested in applying the tools of seismology to study deep earthquakes, regional tectonics, and earthquake hazards. Prospective students should have a strong quantitative background in geophysics, mathematics, physics, and programming. 

Financial support is available through TA and RA positions, and the Nuttli-Chan fellowship. To be considered for financial support, applications should be completed by February 1, 2018.
