PhD position, Early Stage Researcher MSCA-ITN: ImmerSAFE Project (# of pos: 2)
University of Zagreb, Croatia is an active teaching and research community with more than 60,000 students, 29 faculties, and three art academies. Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing is the most research-intensive research environment at University of Zagreb and the national leader in computer science research. Image Processing Group was founded in 1996 and has extensive experience in theoretical and applied research in image processing and computer vision with medical, industrial, and automotive applications. Welcome to join us at University of Zagreb!
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (H2020-MSCA-ITN) project “Immersive Visual Technologies for safety-critical Applications” (ImmerSAFE) invites applications for two full-time, three-year Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions to begin January 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter. The available ESR subprojects (“Multi-camera surround view visualisation and multi-modal sensor integration” and “Real-time image processing and analysis of UAV videos for safety-critical applications”) are located at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia and the ESRs will be offered 3-year PhD contracts. ImmerSAFE’ main goal is to train multi-disciplinary experts, who will achieve an operational understanding of the core imaging, image processing and analysis technologies and the requirements set to them by the safety-critical applications.
The focus of the PhD student positions is research into image processing and analysis of immersive visual data. The thesis work will be performed within the ImmerSAFE project, which will include 15 PhD students in 5 countries (Finland, Croatia, Italy, Norway and Sweden). In addition to doctoral studies at University of Zagreb, the recruited PhD students will interact extensively with the 14 partners in the project and will do part of their research as secondments for up to three months at some of the partners premises.
Position 1 (ESR 3)
Research project: Multi-camera surround view visualisation and multi-modal sensor integration
Objectives: Develop multi-damera system for visualization of the surrounding area of a work machine. Develop a methodology for determining the optimal position of cameras for a given work machine. Address problmes related to calibration of the multi-camera system, stitching of images taking into account irregular shapes of a work machine, and varying lighting conditions at each camera resulting in variable brightness, contrast, and white balance. Investigate the use of non-image based sensors (e.g. lidars) as multi-modal sensing tools that can provide 3D map of the surrounding area thereby assisting the developed visualisation algorithms.
Expected outcomes: Methods for determining an optimised spatial camera arrangement for a given work machine. Novel image processing methods for multi-camera stitching. Algorithms for integration of multi-modal sensing into surround view visualisation. Methods for 3D reconstruction of the surrounding area. Algorithms for automatic obstacle detection.
Planned secondments: (1) CrossControl AB, Sweden, familiarisation with interior of a mobile work machine and operator’s preferences/requirements, (2) Beneq Oy, Finland, 3 months, visualising data on transparent displays.
Position 2 (ESR 13)
Research project: Real-time image processing and analysis of UAV videos for safety critical applications
Objectives: Develop methods for real-time detection and tracking of objects in videos obtained
from unmanned arial vehicles (UAV) mounted camera(s), taking into account degradation in images due to environmental and atmospheric conditions (e.g. smoke, dust, fog, rain, snow, low-illumination). Investigate the integration of information obtained from images in visible, near-infrared and thermal spectral ranges sensed by multispectral cameras. Develop approaches for integrating video information obtained from multiple UAVs in order to improve visualisation quality under conditions of low visibility. Identify and exploit novel use scenarios of UAV imaging.
Expected outcomes: Methods for real-time detection and tracking of victims, rescue personnel and disaster response vehicles from one or more UAV videos. Novel method for real-time visualisation of a disaster scene augmented with the location of detected people and objects.
Planned secondments: VTT Research Centre of Finland Ltd., Finland, identifying new use scenarios for UAV imaging based on foresight methodologies, Forum for Intelligent Machines (FIMA), Finland, testing UAV imaging solutions in realistic environment.
Research environment:
The employed researchers will be part of the Image Processing Group lead by Prof. Sven Lončarić. The group is a part of the Centre for Computer Vision and the employed researchers will work closely with experts in the area of image processing and analysis. Capability for working in multi-disciplinary and international environment is appreciated.
