Graduate Student Admissions Readers – UW Honors Program
Description:
The University Honors Program has an outstanding opportunity for Undergraduate Honors Admissions Review Readers. We are seeking graduate students for several 50% FTE Graduate Staff Assistant appointments, with an average of 20 hours/week, 220 hours total for the three-month appointment during Winter Quarter 2019. These positions are eligible for a tuition/fee waiver per the terms of the ASE union contract, along with GAIP health care benefits. They offer a valuable hands-on opportunity to participate with higher education professionals in the review of undergraduate freshmen applications to the Honors Program for admittance Autumn Quarter 2019. Multiple positions available.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Readers will:
• Use professional judgment when reviewing complex applications for admission to the UW Honors Program, using a combination of personal and academic factors.
• Read and evaluate approximately 80 applications per week (may vary depending on applicant pool)
• Assess applicants for motivation, initiative, leadership potential, work/life experience, extracurricular activities, socioeconomic status, disability, and educational/personal hardship.
• Evaluate academic history and opportunities.
• Use knowledge of program requirements and applicant pool to assess the applicants’ overall record and experience for admissions recommendation. Multiple readers assess applications separately, and Honors Program staff make final admission decisions based on a holistic assessment rubric.
DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: December 16, 2018 – March 15, 2019. Candidates must be available for one five-hour training on December 17, 2018 and will begin reviewing applications then.
HOURS: Approximately 20 hours per week, one quarter of which must be completed in the Honors Program office during set Honors Admission reading sessions between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. weekdays (exact dates/time TBD). The remaining hours may be flexible, to be completed remotely via an online reading system.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be formally enrolled in a program in the UW Graduate School for at least 10 credits during Winter Quarter 2019.
• Able to:
– analyze and synthesize large amounts of information, considering academic and personal factors;
– read and manage electronic application files via online platforms;
– quickly learn and apply complex assessment guidelines without personal bias;
– read rapidly and accurately and work independently for hours at a time;
– discreetly manage highly confidential personal data as it relates to reading student applications;
– be sensitive to complex diversity/multicultural/socioeconomic issues and educational disadvantage;
– read at least 80 applications per week; and
– attend in-person on-boarding and training December 17, 2018.
DESIRED:
• Previous participation or direct affiliation with the UW Honors Program or other undergraduate honors programs, demonstrating a practical understanding of the program’s mission and values;
• Thorough knowledge of academic programs, including curricula, admissions requirements, at colleges/universities and specifically at UW; and
• Previous participation in admissions and/or evaluation processes.
Equivalent education/experience can substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

In addition to a resume, and in lieu of a traditional cover letter, applicants must submit a letter addressing the following questions in 600 words or less:
Question 1: Your job is to select for the University of Washington Honors Program a strong, engaged, and diverse class of freshmen who are interested in interdisciplinary learning. What is the meaning of “strong, engaged, and diverse?” How would you define “interdisciplinary learning?” What factors would you consider in reviewing applications and why?
Question 2: How will you objectively evaluate an applicant whose views conflict with yours? Please give an example to illustrate your decision-making process.
The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process. These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter and/or others. Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select “Apply to this position.”
Once you begin an assessment, it must be completed at that time; if you do not complete the assessment you will be prompted to do so the next time you access your “My Jobs” page. If you select to take it later, it will appear on your “My Jobs” page to take when you are ready. Minimum Education and Experience |
AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II. |
