Les Elvin Memorial Master of Nursing Indigenous Scholarship

Donor

Hunter Primary Care

Establishment

As a primary health care organisation, Hunter Primary Care is committed to improving the health outcomes of the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the Hunter region.

Hunter Primary Care has created two new scholarships specifically designed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Registered Nurses to undertake further education in either a Master of Nursing, Master of Midwifery Studies, Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner), Master of Mental Health Nursing (Nurse Practitioner), Master of Mental Health Nursing or Master of Applied Management (Nursing).

The aim of the scholarships is to improve the health of Aboriginal people in the Hunter rural region by increasing the skilled Indigenous health practitioner workforce.

Uncle Les Elvin was as a proud Wonnarua man who contributed greatly to our organisation, Hunter Primary Care, by enhancing our cultural understanding and teaching us about the wonderful contribution Aboriginal culture has made to our community.

In late 2011, Hunter Primary Care, then operating as Hunter Urban Medicare Local, was delighted to commission Uncle Les to produce a number of artworks representing the four local government areas of Maitland, Port Stephens, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. These paintings still take pride of place in our Newcastle headquarters.
