Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering invites applications for

Master’s thesis position in

“Modelling cellulose interactions toward understanding cellulose fiber regeneration”

Cellulose is an abundant, renewable biomaterial with enormous potential in high value applications ranging textiles, medicine, electronics, and advanced purification filters. Cellulose based materials can be ultra-tough, super flexible, very light, or highly adsorbent.  The superior characteristics result from hierarchical ordering of single cellulose molecules to fibers. Key steps in engineering cellulose based materials with superior characteristics and processability is the formation and breaking apart of these fibers in solution. This is still lacking some fundamental understanding, which hampers the use of cellulose’s full potential.

At the molecular level, a cellulose molecule is a polymer of glucose: in this Master’s thesis, molecular modelling (molecular dynamics simulations) will be used for studying the interactions and assembly of glucose polymers at molecular level. The work is in tight collaboration with experimentalist and targets elucidating detailed X-ray scattering experiments data that has been collected sequentially during the regeneration of cellulose fibers from solution. The thesis work offers a superior opportunity to learn via a bottom-up (microscopic-to-macroscopic) approach about biopolymer and polysaccharide systems and to gain insight into the production of a novel class of man-made cellulosic fibers. The work is highly important to improve the award-winning fiber spinning process developed at Aalto University.
