PhD positions in International Graduate School – Theology, Sociology, Classics, Religious Studies (# of pos: 7)

The University of Graz invites applications for:

up to 7 Positions for Doctoral Students

(35.000/year)

for PhD projects in the fields of Theology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Classics (Classical Philology, Ancient History and Classical Archaeology) within the framework of the International Graduate School (IGS) “Resonant Self–World Relations in Ancient and Modern Socio-Religious Practices” directed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Spickermann and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Irmtraud Fischer (Graz) and Prof. Dr. Jörg Rüpke and Prof. Dr. Hartmut Rosa (Erfurt). The positions are to be filled by 1 October 2018 for a period of 24 months with the option of extension for a further 12 months pending review.

The project is a cooperation between the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt and the University of Graz, funded by the FWF and the DFG. Participants are required to spend one academic year at the cooperating university in the second year of their term.

As an International Research Training Group, the programme’s primary language is English.

Requirements

  • Excellent degree in one of the above named disciplines
  • Knowledge of English, German (native speaker or respective certificates), and other relevant languages (at least reading skills, candidates without knowledge of German are requested to take courses)
  • Willingness to cooperate within in the interdisciplinary research environment of the University of Graz, in particular the IGS, and the Max-Weber-Kolleg
  • Willingness to take part in the joint study programme and to move to the Max-Weber-Kolleg for one academic year.

Application/Deadline

Please submit your application with CV (in English or German), copies of your final school and university degrees, a copy of your MA or diploma thesis, one letter of recommendation and an outline of the PhD project you would like to pursue (max. 5 pages) with a stringent discussion of your research questions, the state of research on the topic, the methodological approach and the leading hypotheses as well as a working schedule and projected date of completion as one pdf-file (maximum of 10 MB) by 15 April 2018 to:

PhD positions in Population Genetics (# of pos: 4)

Over the past years, Vienna has developed into one of the leading centres of population genetics. The Vienna Graduate School of Population Genetics has been founded to provide a training opportunity for PhD students to build on this excellent on site expertise.

We invite applications from highly motivated and outstanding students with a background in one of the following disciplines: bioinformatics, statistics, evolutionary genetics, functional genetics, theoretical and experimental population genetics. Students from related disciplines, such as physics or mathematics are also welcome to apply.

Topics include:

  • Comparative population genomics in Drosophila species.
  • Contribution of transposable elements to adaption during experimental evolution.
  • Developing new statistical tools for the identification of adaptive QTLs.
  • Evolution of gene expression.
  • Evolution of phenotypic plasticity.
  • Evolution of sex chromosomes in Drosophila species.
  • Evolution of sperm competition in Drosophila.
  • Functional characterization of adaptive QTLs.
  • Maximum likelihood inference of population genetic parameters using genome-wide data from nearly neutral sites.
  • Sex-specific arms race between transposable elements and small RNAs.

Only complete applications (application form, CV, motivation letter, university certificates, indication of the two preferred topics in a single pdf) received by January 14, 2018 will be considered. Two letters of recommendation need to be sent directly by the referees. Accepted PhD students will receive a monthly salary based on currently EUR 2071 before tax according to the regulations of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

PhD in Physics

We have an open PhD position for interested students having a master degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry and related subjects. The three-year position is related to a project on the experimental study of inelastic electron interaction with radiosensitiser molecules. The successful candidate will perform mass spectrometry experiments with different radiosensitiser molecules in the gas phase, at isolated and cluster conditions; see for example DOI: 10.1002/anie.201503733, DOI: 10.1002/anie.201407452 and DOI: 10.1002/anie.201705504 for similar studies.

The position is coupled to the enrollment to the PhD-programme in physics at the University of Innsbruck  (see http://www.uibk.ac.at/studium/angebot/phd-physik/index.html.en and https://www.uibk.ac.at/studium/anmeldung-zulassung/doktoratsstudium/index.html.en for all details).

Experience in the field of mass spectrometry or electron spectroscopy is beneficial but not necessarily required.  Advanced skills in written/spoken English are required.

We offer you to work in one of the internationally leading research teams in low-energy electron collisions. The knowledge and experience gained by this PhD are broad and offer perspectives to find later a job related to physics, physical chemistry and radiation therapy. Moreover, Innsbruck is a city, which is well-known to offer a high quality of life.    

The salary after tax is in total ~19.560,- Euro per year. Social insurance is already included in the salary.
