Job Description

ECU News Services is seeking student interns with a keen interest and preferably experience in journalism, writing, communication and social media.

The students will be responsible for coordinating with the university photographer and interviewing, writing and producing the Pirate Profiles that appear on www.ecu.edu every three weeks. The interns also will write stories about students, faculty and staff and topics ranging from School of Theatre and Dance productions to special events to research. The interns will be expected to write effectively and efficiently in required AP style. The interns will learn how to write news releases and media advisories. The interns will have the opportunity to collaborate on special social media projects for official ECU accounts. Additional duties such as answering the office phone to cover lunch breaks or meetings may be assigned.

The interns will be supervised and mentored by university communication professionals with experience in newspaper reporting, marketing and public relations. Ability to meet deadlines is essential.

The interns will have a workstation in Howard House, which is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Based around class schedule, a work schedule of up to 20 hours a week will be developed. This should be the student’s primary job outside of classes. Some assignments may occasionally require work at night.

This position offers growth over the course of the internship. A student can build a portfolio by going beyond the minimum number of Pirate Profile stories. Interns who become engaged in their role and bring story ideas to the content team will have the most success. The interns will have the opportunity to attend weekly staff meetings and monthly meetings with communication specialists across the university as well as bi-monthly ECU Board of Trustees meetings to learn more about university leadership. Other opportunities include: participation in communication strategy for internal and external campaigns; providing media escorts and assisting with press conferences; conducting research for leadership presentations, media statements, etc.; drafting talking points for leadership; assisting with concept and production of divisional marketing efforts, including videos and brochures.
 
Required qualifications:
Ability to interview students, staff, faculty, administrators and alumni
Ability to write stories by assigned dates
Confidentiality, trustworthy, fair judgment and impartiality is a must
Ability to get along well with people
Ability to work independently
Ability to accept and learn from feedback and revision of stories
Curiosity about university life, departments and schools, programs, research and people at ECU
Basic knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel)

Up to 20 hours per week with flexible work schedule (around class schedule). Pay is $8 per hour. Starting May 28, 2018 through fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters depending on work ethic and job performance. The goal is for the student to work with ECU News Services for a year.

Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)

Preferred Communications majors.

In addition, preferred qualifications:
Experience in news writing, creative writing, communication skills outside of class assignments
Working knowledge of AP style
Technically sound in grammar and spelling
Comfortable taking photographs and video for social media
Knowledgeable about current events

Posting Summary

The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. This position is responsible for daily care of the children enrolled in his/her class. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: physical caregiving, following an age appropriate daily plan, and facilitation of supportive relationships with co-workers, parents, and students. The Classroom Assistant II ensures, supports, and promotes each child’s safety, health, and development in cooperation with their families and other early childhood professionals in a manner consistent with NAEYC, NJDHS and child care licensing regulations

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required.

Job Description

 

The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) seeks to fill a Student Assistant position to contribute to CIMMS Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground (mPING) project (http://mping.ou.edu/).

The principal duties of this position are:

  • Develop technical expertise with the Python/Django RESTful system and the packages and tools used in the mPING project
  • Develop a plan for system improvements and changes to the mPING system with CIMMS personnel
  • Document the project by way of creating appropriate wiki pages
  • Potentially work on creating automated backup and system monitoring tools
  • Potentially make modifications and improvements to the iOS and Android mPING apps
  • Potentially develop new display web tools for research purposes
  •  

     

    Job Requirements

     

    Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Fall 2018 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

    • Must attach Fall 2018 oZONE class schedule.

    Skills:

    • Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
    • Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications

    Department Preferences:

    • Optional experience with mobile app development on Android and/or iOS is a plus
    • Experience debugging and/or trouble shooting software and hardware issues
    • Experience working with complex software applications and web-based communications
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others
