    Job Summary

    Student Success Advocates work to assist students in identifying direction, engaging with high impact activities / services, and accomplishing goals. Specifically, advocates foster successful transition to the university environment, identify services and resources for degree development that meet students’ needs, assist students in identifying resources for major and career selection, link students with opportunities to engage in deep learning and encourage timely graduation. This advocate position will work primarily with Return to the U students, identified as non-traditional, returning and transfer students who have the extra challenge of fitting school around their lives.

    Responsibilities

    1.Provide individualized advising to Return to the U, non-traditional, and UOnline students, linking them to campus opportunities to enhance their academic program.
    2.Develop a working knowledge of University of Utah academic advising, financial aid, and career development services and procedures to utilize in non-traditional student advising. Work closely with Return to the U Academic Advisor.
    3.Engage with departmental and program academic advisors to gain a working knowledge of program requirements to consider when assisting students in connecting with University resources and opportunities. Focus will be placed on understanding completion pathway programs requirements.
    4.Utilize student success and persistence, student identity development, and learning theories to shape student interactions.
    5.Employ listening and advising practices to assist students from diverse backgrounds in accessing University resources and opportunities, and developing graduation plans.
    6.Develop resources (printed literature, web sites, deep learning strategy videos, social media sites, etc.) to assist students in exploring opportunities to enhance their academic program.
    7.Document advising sessions and develop practices and procedures for following up with students and maintaining engagement.
    8.Work closely with Return to the U marketing staff on campaign messaging.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or other related area

    Previous experience in an advising, counseling or teaching in higher education environment is preferred

    Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
