What is Federal Work Study?
The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) provides part-time employment to learners with financial need. Financial need is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) provided by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The award amount depends on your financial need and is based on expected weekly employment targets. Unlike federal grants, funds from the Federal Work Study are paid to the learner on a bi-weekly basis after employment requirements have been met and wages have been earned. The inclusion of Federal Work Study in your financial aid award is not a guarantee of the amount you will earn as you will be paid only for the hours that you actually work.
All federal aid sources must be included in your financial aid, including the Federal Work Study Program. With this additional federal aid source, it may reduce the amount of federal loans you would be eligible for. Keep in mind that federal loans must be paid back (with interest) whereas the Federal Work Study Program funds are provided to you bi-weekly and do not require repayment.
The FlexPath Tutor is responsible for providing academic and instructional support to learners in self-paced courses to help them build competency in their courses. This support will be offered through: 1-1 coaching and consultation, course room tips, and the facilitation of periodic group study sessions.
- 1:1 tutoring and consultation will be conducted proactively with learners who desire preparation and practice prior to submitting a course assessment, and with learners who fail an assessment and are required to seek tutoring prior to resubmission.
- Tutors develop and share learning resources to assist learners with course content, understanding concepts, and building competencies
- Group study sessions will be offered periodically in Adobe Connect. These sessions will include interactive learning activities that integrate study strategies and resources with course content, using a variety of techniques to promote active learning.
This position requires 10-15 hours a week and is remote. Most duties can be completed on nights and weekends, but some availability during regular business hours for training and weekly team meetings may also be required. This role is expected to continue through June 2019.
- Have completed the 2018-2019 FAFSA.
- Have successfully completed a minimum of 3 quarters at Capella University with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their program of study. Be prepared to submit your unofficial transcript when requested.
- Be continuously enrolled as a learner during their appointment as work study tutor
- Be in good academic standing.
- Have academic and professional experience related to the content area(s) such as psychology, nursing, business, IT or health administration.
- Must be enrolled in a doctoral program at Capella
- Provides 1:1 and group tutoring support to learners.
- Provides assistance in the use and application of academic resources.
- Develops learning resources to assist learners.
- Maintains learner confidentiality and adheres to FERPA
- Attends all scheduled meetings.
- Models successful academic practices.
- Completes initial and ongoing training as needed
- Interest or experience with teaching or tutoring.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with faculty, coaches, and learners.
