Beit Trust Scholarships

Scholarships and
Surgical Scholarships

The Beit Trust offers annually a number of
Postgraduate Scholarships abroad (excluding
MBAs and Ph.Ds.) to graduates who are domiciled in and are nationals of
Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe (and
only
to graduates in these three countries)
.

Scholarships are
taken up at a
partner university in the United Kingdom or South Africa, for study in a
subject of the individual’s choice appropriate to the needs of their
country.  Duration is normally for a one-year taught Master’s in the UK
and two years in South Africa.
 

Postgraduate
Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and the following
Universities:

Cambridge

Edinburgh

Glasgow – University of Glasgow (Biomedical Scholarships)

Glasgow –
University of Strathclyde (Engineering
Scholarships
)

Leeds

Oxford (Wadham College)

South Africa

University of Cape Town

Rhodes University

Stellenbosch
University

Applicants will normally be expected
to apply to these partner universities.

By Act of Parliament,
the Beit Trust sponsors

ONLY

students who are nationals of Malawi, Zambia or
Zimbabwe, and currently live there. In addition,
the Trust
cannot consider applications from those who have already begun a
course.

All applicants
(except medical and veterinary doctors) must be under 30 years of age on
31 December of the year of application. Some experience of work after
completion of a first degree is essential. Doctors and vets must be
under
35 years of age
on 31 December and should have completed 18 months of
internship and a one-year, preferably rural, posting in the relevant
country.

The extent of a
Beit Postgraduate Scholarship Grant is:

Fees,
tuition costs and related academic expenses are paid by the Trust direct to the universities.

Payment of a personal
allowance, index linked in accordance with guidance from an independent authority, covering
maintenance support.

Other allowances
are paid for: arrival, a laptop, printing of a thesis, and return
home.

Economy Class air
passages are provided by the Trust for the initial journey to the place of
study, and on final return.

No allowances are
paid for spouses or other family members.

online form as early as possible to establish
whether they would qualify to apply. If you do qualify, a form will be
emailed to you
and you will be required to
provide additional information and details. This information
will include, but may not be restricted to, the following:-

  • A fuller application

  • A medical
    certificate from your doctor

  • A
    certified transcript of your degree results

  • A
    certified document of evidence of residency (National Registration
    Card or birth certificate)

  • Current CV
    showing
    all work experience


  • A current photograph (not a passport photo)

The Trust will consider only those applicants who state that they intend to return to work
in the relevant country upon completion of the scholarship; and who can,
if short-listed, present themselves for interview before a Beit
Scholarship Selection Board in Harare, Blantyre or Lusaka when
requested.

Selection is very
competitive. The selectors favour practical and useful disciplines that are
likely to offer a clear benefit to their country of origin.

The Trust does not consider applicants for MBAs and PhDs.

Beit COSECSA Surgical In-Country Scholarship


In 2010 The Beit Trust established a five-year trial
scheme to offer in-country Beit-COSECSA postgraduate surgical
scholarships to one surgeon per year from each of Malawi, Zambia and
Zimbabwe. These scholarships are undertaken at selected teaching
hospitals in the Beit beneficial area in accordance with medical
protocols set out by the College of Surgeons of East, Central and
Southern Africa (COSECSA). Beit funding covers the costs of
registration, enrolment, exam fees, international travel to COSECSA
seminars, graduation costs at two levels, and a personal
stipend. Membership of COSECSA may be gained after
2 years study (MCS), with Fellowship after 5 years (FCS). For details of

The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. This position is responsible for daily care of the children enrolled in his/her class. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: physical caregiving, following an age appropriate daily plan, and facilitation of supportive relationships with co-workers, parents, and students. The Classroom Assistant II ensures, supports, and promotes each child’s safety, health, and development in cooperation with their families and other early childhood professionals in a manner consistent with NAEYC, NJDHS and child care licensing regulations

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II.

Preferred Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required.

Job Description

 

The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) seeks to fill a Student Assistant position to contribute to CIMMS Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground (mPING) project (http://mping.ou.edu/).

The principal duties of this position are:

  • Develop technical expertise with the Python/Django RESTful system and the packages and tools used in the mPING project
  • Develop a plan for system improvements and changes to the mPING system with CIMMS personnel
  • Document the project by way of creating appropriate wiki pages
  • Potentially work on creating automated backup and system monitoring tools
  • Potentially make modifications and improvements to the iOS and Android mPING apps
  • Potentially develop new display web tools for research purposes
  •  

     

    Job Requirements

     

    Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Fall 2018 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

    • Must attach Fall 2018 oZONE class schedule.

    Skills:

    • Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
    • Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications

    Department Preferences:

    • Optional experience with mobile app development on Android and/or iOS is a plus
    • Experience debugging and/or trouble shooting software and hardware issues
    • Experience working with complex software applications and web-based communications
