Student Success Advisor (2 Positions Available)

General Summary: 

The overall goal of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) Student Success Center (SSC) is to enhance advising in the academic home of CSM students, to increase the number of places that a student can find guidance and support, and to do so in a network of partnerships, so as to improve student retention and reduce time to graduation.  The mission of the Student Success Advisor includes supporting CSM faculty in implementing major-specific advising procedures and policies, effectively communicating said procedures and policies to the CSM student body, and supporting CSM students in attaining their educational and career goals.  Thus, the specifics of Student Success Advisor interactions with faculty and students can be expected to vary in a way that reflects differing advising practices across CSM departments.

The Student Success Advisor will be responsible for continuing a proactive, developmental advising culture in order to provide to students guidance based on theories and knowledge of teaching, learning and human development, reflective of developmental and demographic profiles of the student population, and responsive to the needs of individuals, special populations, and communities.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Provide individual (on both walk-in and appointment basis) and group advising for students served by the Student Success Center on a wide range of academic issues, including degree requirements and the general education curriculum of the university;
  • Participate in New Student Orientation program to present Advising and Registration sessions for CSM, as well as Open House and Welcome Day sessions; assist students with making a smooth transition to campus;
  • Explain and interpret transfer credit policies and evaluations; assist students with the inter-college transfer process;
  • Use WISER, the degree progress report, and other technological tools to advise students;
  • Serve as designated academic advisor for sections of Science Gateway Seminar;
  • Manage and develop as well as assist others in one or more programs and/or projects related to student success and retention such as:
    • Freshman Success Communities – communication of block scheduling and advising of students selected to participate;
    • Supplemental Instruction – working with faculty and student leaders to offer additional help for traditional gateway courses;
    • Student Referral Program – working with faculty to identify at-risk students and intervene with advising and other support services;
    • Academic Probation Program – intrusive advising program for students who have been placed on academic probation by the university;
    • Assist with communications to students – distribution of news and information through e-mail and by using technology as a communication tool in advising;
    • Academic Enhancement Services – location and communication of undergraduate research or internship opportunities for CSM students;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree and a minimum of two (2) years of providing direct student services in higher education is required. A Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of providing direct student services in higher education can be substituted for the required experience. Some evening and occasional weekends may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current student development theory and research; 
  • Understanding of professional development needs of science and mathematics students;
  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations; 
  • Ability to utilize technology to promote access, efficiency and effectiveness of programs and services offered by the Student Success Center; 
  • Ability to use and understand student success data in advising; 
  • Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail; 
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills; 
  • Strong commitment to customer service.

Posting Summary

The Classroom Assistant will support the classrooms serving children from ages 0-3 years and creating and maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for young children. This position is responsible for daily care of the children enrolled in his/her class. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: physical caregiving, following an age appropriate daily plan, and facilitation of supportive relationships with co-workers, parents, and students. The Classroom Assistant II ensures, supports, and promotes each child’s safety, health, and development in cooperation with their families and other early childhood professionals in a manner consistent with NAEYC, NJDHS and child care licensing regulations

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

AA degree, preferably in the field of Early Childhood Education of Child Development from an accredited public or private institution of higher education. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for Preschool Caregivers required or an equivalent credential that addresses comparable competencies; or must obtain the credential within one year of employment as a Classroom Assistant II.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have (or be willing to obtain) training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children. Ability to work as part of a multi-program/disciplinary team in providing a variety of services to children and families. Experience working with children from low income families. Valid First Aid/CPR card, food handler’s card, negative TB test, and clear criminal background check required.

Job Description

 

The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) seeks to fill a Student Assistant position to contribute to CIMMS Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground (mPING) project (http://mping.ou.edu/).

The principal duties of this position are:

  • Develop technical expertise with the Python/Django RESTful system and the packages and tools used in the mPING project
  • Develop a plan for system improvements and changes to the mPING system with CIMMS personnel
  • Document the project by way of creating appropriate wiki pages
  • Potentially work on creating automated backup and system monitoring tools
  • Potentially make modifications and improvements to the iOS and Android mPING apps
  • Potentially develop new display web tools for research purposes
  •  

     

    Job Requirements

     

    Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the current Fall 2018 Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

    • Must attach Fall 2018 oZONE class schedule.

    Skills:

    • Strong computer programming skills with particular emphasis on Python and PostgreSQL
    • Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and web services such as Nginx, Django and RESTful web applications

    Department Preferences:

    • Optional experience with mobile app development on Android and/or iOS is a plus
    • Experience debugging and/or trouble shooting software and hardware issues
    • Experience working with complex software applications and web-based communications
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others
