Position Summary and Duties

Under the direction of the Plumbing Supervisor, the Plumbing Lead performs a variety of duties related to plumbing work installing, modifying, maintaining and repairing plumbing systems. In the absence of the Supervisor, the Plumbing Lead will assume the supervisor role. This is an essential personnel position for the maintenance and operation of the campus during an emergency situations. The Plumbing Lead serves as a technical resource and mentor to promote professional growth of others.

Leadership Functions:
• Leads and monitors the day-to-day work of Plumber II personnel. Schedules, coordinates and insures completion of assigned tasks for plumbing operations.
• Monitors and records daily readings of components and conditions at the methane house. Responds to pump high pressure alarms, and schedules pumping as necessary.
• Purchases materials and supplies to perform necessary plumbing repairs and installations.
• Conducts quality control/inspections. Reports malfunctions, unsafe conditions, repairs required and condition of plumbing systems and equipment to supervisor. Documents issues and follows up on progress.
Maintenance Duties:
• Inspects, installs, maintains and repairs various systems including plumbing, sanitary, gas, & storm drains. Inspects and investigates leaks and determines appropriate actions to resolve.
• Inspects, installs, maintains and repairs various plumbing pipes, fittings, fixtures, valves, sprinkler heads, boilers and other related appliances within campus facilities and infrastructure according to plumbing code.
• Performs skilled plumbing on hot or cold water systems, steam heating, compressed air, gas supply, and lab equipment. Inspects pipe to ascertain obstructions and appropriate actions to unclog.
• Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains; repairs and maintains internal plumbing systems and external drains; cleans and flushes plumbing systems utilizing appropriate equipment.
• Performs troubleshooting work to locate deficiencies and problems in plumbing systems and diagnoses problems using prints, diagrams, schematics, and test equipment.
• Inspects grease interceptors for proper functioning and arranges for monthly pumping and cleaning for compliance with City of Baltimore FOG regulations.
• Operates and maintains standard equipment including power and hand tools.
• Ensures operational readiness and safety of work areas, tools, and equipment; conducts routine inspections; performs routine repairs and maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ensures cost effective use of materials allocated.
• Assists with snow/ice removal campus wide as required and directed.
• Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

This position is scheduled to work Wednesday – Sunday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.

Required Qualifications

Education required: Vocational or technical training in Plumbing

5 to 8 years work experience is required.

Master Plumbers License is required.
Valid Maryland Driver’s License is required.

This is an essential position and the ability to respond to after hour emergencies is mandatory.

Physical/Environmental demands:
Work involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined space, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally very heavy (I 00 pounds or over) items. The work environment involves exposure to various elements such as chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, or dampness, where work exposes the employee to potentially non-disabling injuries. Duties require that work be performed in adverse weather conditions. Work may require exposure to dangerous equipment and machinery . Work usually requires use of protective clothing or gear such as earplugs, hard hats, mask, gloves, insulated clothing, boots, coats, etc.

The ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, man lifts etc. and heights up to 100’ are required.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s or vocational/technical school degree is preferred.
